Are You a Tempo Team?
Are you even a tempo team if opposing defenses don't look like before the snap?
There is beauty in the people who commit to something and do it will full conviction.
The picture above, in my (correct) opinion, is beautiful. Not because I love offense and seeing the defense on their toes. But because the Bears believed in tempo with all their heart and committed to making the defense pay if they couldn't keep up. I once saw a clip where Art Briles said that people don't pay for tickets to watch them huddle. They pay to see the Bears go fast and score.
This brings me to the fundamentals of the game of football.
Distractions are everywhere when it comes to coaching. With access to the internet, you can see a million cool plays any time you want to. But what makes those plays cool or successful? Those are the secrets found only in the fundamentals.
More:
I just got finished on an hour and half zoom clinic with Coach Jim McNally and watching him breakdown plays made me realize something that might be useful to you like it was for me.
McNally believes with every bone in his body that OL should stay square as long as possible. He brings it up every single play we watch. He also brings up the fundamentals of playing long and not vacating the line of scrimmage. After hours and hours of listening to him breakdown plays, these come up every single time.
In fact, whenever he is trying to figure out why a play that we're watching didn't work, he just checks to see if the players were playing with those fundamentals and then imagines what would've happened differently if they would have played square, long, and didn't vacate the line of scrimmage.
So what I realized earlier was that I don't have those fundamentals for the QBs ingrained in my QBs' brains like I have play square, long and don't vacate the line ingrained in mine.
Belief is everything. There are certain thing that the players have to know you believe in and in turn, believe themselves. Without conviction, results are capped.
Anyways, if you're interested to see how he does it (live or over the 20 plus hours of recordings), here's the link to check it out:
