Happy Sunday morning and welcome another roundup of all the happenings this past week.
Among other things, we’ll be taking a look at the 2023 Kansas Jayhawks offense this week.
Article & Video of the Week:
The Deep Choice concept is a fun one — you get to throw the ball deep and often. Not many people have documented how to teach the play, so when something comes out it’s worth taking a look at. That is the case today too. The fellas at The Board Drill published an article on the play not only going over the schematics of the play, but how to teach it with drills and ideas for in-game adjustments. They also have a video linked in the post to a podcast they did with Adam Donnelly of Lake Mary HS in Florida going over the play. Great read, highly recommend.
Here’s the article (the video is linked at the end of the article):
Book Recommendation
Whether we like it or not there is a translation between what is said and what is heard. This applies to all forms of communication, even this article. The beginning of teaching and learning is communication, so there is a particular impetus in getting our language right. While the player must ultimately figure things out on his own, language is the tool that shapes how he thinks and without inefficient and non-specific language is a dull tool. And language, as it turns out, is the foundation from which he figures things out for himself. Headset to Helmet makes the argument for not only a particular way of communication (which is detailed in the book), but for the need of this particular way of communication. It’s informative, but challenging. Are we really helping the player work through problems or are we simply giving him a checklist he needs to memorize?
