July 15-20, 2024 Weekly Roundup
All the happenings this past week and a preview for the week to come.
Good morning — another week closer to fall camps starting.
This week we’ll take a look at variations and adjustments off of common concepts found in most offenses. The goal will be to explore why offenses go to these adjustments and how they read them out.
As it would be, the article and video recommendation shows a great example from the NFL…

While the stick concept is a staple in many offenses, I’m not sure about this version. Dagger is common in the NFL, but probably not as common in high school if I had to guess — high school is dominated by quick game and sprint outs. And often the quick games split the field with mirrored concepts and sprint outs do so literally. While I believe mirrored concepts have their space (though limited), any quick game that can pull a full field read is ideal — and intriguing.
So this variation caught my attention because it provided a way to build a full field read into a quick game concept. This article goes over how the Green Bay Packers combine the stick concept with dagger and includes a 20 minute cutup of the concept.
, the author of the article, writes phenomenal books too (I have all his 49ers ones), and this one looks just as good. Check out the article here from his breakdown on the Packers’ offense last season:Video link:
