July 8-13, 2024 Weekly Roundup
All the happenings this past week and a preview for the week to come.
Happy Sunday morning and welcome another roundup of all the happenings this past week. But before we get to that, I am going to set the stage for this week’s posts rather than share any recommendations.
While last week was all about RPOs and this week will be all about how games are won. You often here that winning comes down to two factors: turnovers and explosive plays. Another key factor is the efficiency of your drives, and how often you turn a set of downs into either a first down or a touchdown. For example, a 3rd down conversion doesn’t have to be explosive for it to be a impactful. So this week will be a look at an offensive performance from this lens: how does an offense’s game plan create explosives and get first downs/touchdowns.
We will look at the Georgia Bulldogs’ offense in their 42-41 2022 Peach Bowl victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes. We won’t be able to get the full story of victory without looking at how the Bulldogs’ defense played, so instead we are really observing how the Bulldogs’ scored enough points to have the opportunity to win. This game was a high scoring affair that required them to come from behind. In other words, this game was a demonstration of stringent requirements: the Bulldogs needed to score every time they did or else they would’ve lost.
In the beginning of a game you have no idea how many points you’ll need to score. The goal is just to score as often as possible. So when a team goes out and scores 42 points in a victory by 1 point, is that any different than a victory where you also score 42 points but win by 21? Not really. Who cares about the other offense scoring, the offense’s goal is to move the chains and score points regardless of what the other offense is doing. The pressure of the situation is the difference. So that is how we’ll look at this game since we won’t be looking at Ohio State (yet).
Explosives & Turnovers
Georgia Bulldogs: 10 pass, 4 run; 1 turnover
Ohio State Buckeyes: 10 Pass, 5 run; 0 turnovers
Georgia’s Key Statistics

Rushing: 26 attempts, 135 yards

Structure
Tomorrow’s post will go over the first two drives and each day will follow the subsequent two (they had 12 total, not counting the two that ended in kneel downs at the end of each half). We won’t dive into every play of each drive — we’ll stay focused on explosives and key third downs and scoring plays. We’ll also figure out why things worked or didn’t and figure out the game plan as the game goes on.

Until tomorrow,
