August 5 - 10, 2024 Weekly Roundup
All the happenings this past week and a preview for the format to follow for this upcoming football season.
I am working toward a consistent format to follow this season that will follow a few select QBs throughout the season. The key will be getting access to the All-22 for some college games, as the NFL film is readily available.
For the NFL, I’ll follow Brock Purdy (49ers), Caleb Williams (Bears), and Joe Burrow (Bengals).
For college, I’d like to follow Conner Weigman (Texas A&M) and Carson Beck (Georgia) though I’m not sure how reliably I’ll be able to get the coach’s film. So this plan is fluid and will adapt to what team’s film I’m able to get.
These next two week’s posts will preview each quarterback to study the fundamentals they play with and set proper expectations. This past week explored some common themes like taking hits to get the play off, playing with fast feet, and knowing when and how to escape the pocket. I will build off these fundamentals each week to put together a more coherent understanding of what matters at the quarterback position.
Therefore, this season will be a consistent study of what is important and what is not important. Throughout this past summer, I’ve studied everything through the lenses of general football fundamentals: numbers, space, and leverage. The last fundamental lens is personnel, or the nature of a player. Usually this concept is understood in the context of matchups. So we’ll be looking at the quarterback position specifically as our personnel focus. How does he play? What are his strengths and weaknesses? How does he fit develop the story of what it takes to play the position? These are the answers we’ll answer this season.
